Thinking of having some bitcoins well without Bitcoin wallets, you literally can not send or receive Bitcoins. So before you get bitcoins, you will need to buy, download, or create a bitcoin wallet. These article brings you the types of wallets, so you can decide which is best for your bitcoin needs.

Types of Wallets

Online bitcoin wallets.
These are wallets that can be accessed on the web from any internet connected device. They are best suitable in my opinion if you want to earn bitcoins online but are not necessarily the most secure type of wallet and as such are not really the best option for saving your coins. But for an added bonus most online wallets are FREE to create. There are so many good online bitcoin wallets so I could not settle on my very best so I here are my top three.
  1. GreenAddress is a multisig web wallet, with apps available for Chrome, iOS, and Android and is also one of the best online wallets available. It is a little intimidating for a beginner so I would recommend starting with either spectroCoin or StrongCoin before moving to perhaps GreenAddress.
  2. SpectroCoin is an all-in-one solution for Bitcoin. Services offered include a wide range of Bitcoin solutions, from exchange to Bitcoin e-wallet.
  3. StrongCoin is a a hybrid wallet, this means that you can send and receive Bitcoins just like any other wallet but the Bitcoin private key required to send money is encrypted in your browser before it reaches our servers making it really secure yet easy to use
Bitcoin hardware wallets.
These are super secure and sophisticated physical devices designed to secure bitcoins. They are best suitable if you want to keep your coins over longer periods of time and are worth every cent you spend that is if you want to save your stash. For the hardware waller I decided to go with Ledger Nano
Ledger Nano. Ledger Nano is a smart-card based hardware wallet and it costs about 65USD. Yes people hardware wallets are not cheap. But what is wonderful about it is Ledger Nano is super secure and may be used on any computer, or Android device with GreenBits and is also available in cheaper variations of Ledger HW.1 and Ledger Unplugged. If you don't share my love for Ledger Nano that's okay, perhaps an online wallet is better for you or perhaps you can find out about other Hardware brands

Paper Wallets
Paper wallets are private keys printed out on a piece of paper. If generated and printed with a secure, offline computer, paper wallets are secure cold storage. They only have one problem it is really inconvenient to create and print a new wallet each time you send funds.
Software Wallets.
These are wallet applications downloaded to your phone, computer or tablet. They function kinda like banking applications and are quite similar to Online bitcoin wallets.
  1. Mobile Wallet for Android:  Bitcoin Wallet was the first Bitcoin wallet for Android. It’s simple, easy to backup, and connects directly to the Bitcoin network with SPV.
  2. Mobile Wallet for iOS: Breadwallet’s combination of simplicity and security has made it the most popular iOS wallet. iPhone users in search of their first Bitcoin wallet should find Breadwallet easy to understand.
  3. Desktop Wallet: Electrum might as well be the most popular desktop wallet, due to its speed and ease of use. It can also be used as cold storage if you have an extra computer that can be used offline while offering added features like connecting through Tor, multi-signature wallets, integration with hardware wallets, and more.
